Symposium on the management of cactus species

September 21, 2015

In September 2015 I organized a symposium on the management of cactus invasions, as part of the international conference EMAPI 2015, Hawaii. As a result of the symposium, we established an “International Cactus Working Group” (ICWG) launched by the International Organization of Biocontrol (IOBC). 

Looking for biocontrol agents

In September 2015, I did a trip through Baja California (Mexico) with Australian, South African and Mexican experts on cactus species. The aim of the trip was to find new biocontrol agents to control the invasion of Cylindropuntia species (Cactaceae) in South Africa and Australia.

Involving stakeholders in decisions on invasive species management

In August 2015, I organized a workshop on the importance of stakeholders’ perceptions for the management of invasive plants in Cape Town (South Africa). This workshop was attended by different South African stakeholders (City of Cape Town, SANBI…). 

Workshop on Cactus species

In October 2014 I organized a workshop in Graaff Reinet (South Africa) with the aim of partially filling the knowledge gap on social attitudes, levels of awareness and stakeholders’ perceptions of the positive and negative impacts of cactus species in the South African context. 

South African Cactus Working Group

I am a member of the South African Cactus Working Group, which meets semiannually. The aim of these meetings is to collaborate with South African stakeholders (e.g. DEA, Working for Water, SANBI ISP,…) towards the management of cactus invasions in the country and give advice to decision makers.
